Systmatik der basalen Clupeocephala

  • Die VW-Stiftung fördert seit 2014 das Projekt „Hering, Lachs und Karpfen – alte Verwandte mit unbekannter Verwandtschaft – die Phylogenie der basalen Clupeocephala“ am Deutsches Meeresmuseum und der Universität Jena. Dr. Nicolas Straube (ZSM München) übernimmt hierbei den molekularen Teil mit Next Generation Sequencing Methoden. Der morphologische Teil findet u. a. durch die Dissertation von Matthias Mertzen am Deutsches Meeresmuseum statt.
  • Klärung der Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse der Otomorphen (Heringe, Schwarzköpfe, Ostariophysen)
  • Vielfalt und phylogenetische Bedeutung von Epibranchialorganen der Clupeocephala

Biodiversitätserfassung und Taxonomie

  • Durch Feldarbeit u. a. in Burkina Faso, Benin, Kamerun und dem Sudan werden Ichthyofaunen erfasst und beschrieben.
  • Neubeschreibung neuer Fischarten

Vielfalt und phylogenetische Bedeutung der Fischschuppen (in Zusammenarbeit mit Szuszanna Bräger)

  • Erstellung eines Fischschuppenatlanten für die wichtigsten Arten des Mittelmeeres
  • Welche Merkmale an Schuppen eignen sich für welche Fragestellungen (z.B. Artzugehörigkeit, Verwandtschaft, Populationszugehörigkeit, individuelle Life History)?

Schwachelektrische Fische aus Afrika

  • Nilhechte (Familie Mormyridae) kommunizieren und orientieren sich mit Hilfe von schwachelektrischen Entladungen, die sie selbst erzeugen. Die Bedeutung dieser Entladungen bei der Artunterscheidung wird untersucht.

Immer mehr wird über den Stammbaum der Fische bekannt, doch noch gibt es zwei große Bereiche, deren Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen sich bisher nicht auflösen lassen. Die weit abgeleiteten Barschartigen (Percomorpha) und die weiter unten im Stammbaum angesiedelten basalen Clupeocephala. Ziel des Projektes ist es, eine morphologisch und molekular begründete Verwandtschaftshypothese zu erstellen, klar abzugrenzen, welche natürlichen Gruppen (monophyletische Taxa) unterstützt werden, das Alter der Taxa abzuschätzen und die Merkmalsevolution in der Evolution der Fische besser nachvollziehen und verstehen zu können.
