From Renovation to Reopening: The Modernisation of the MEERESMUSEUM

Since July 17 2024, the MEERESMUSEUM has reopened to visitors following extensive modernisation. The oldest site of the Ocean Museum Germany is resided in the former Dominican St Catherine's Monastery in Stralsund’s historic city centre, which made the renovation a particular challenge: the historic structure had to be preserved while integrating modern exhibition technology, accessible pathways, and energy-efficient solutions.

The result is an exciting blend of history, technology, and nature. The new exhibition tour takes visitors on a journey through the evolution of life from the sea, the diversity of the oceans, the interactions between humans and the sea, and innovative strategies for sustainable fisheries.

Since May 5 2025, the aquarium route with 31 tanks has complemented the experience, transporting visitors into the tropical habitats of the world’s oceans.
