The United Nations has proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

Our Museum is an official network partner of the German Ocean Decade Committee and is participating in the Decade with new exhibitions, events as well as research on biodiversity and noise in the ocean.

Seagrass, Art and Climate Action

The Ocean Museum Germany in Stralsund presents a special exhibition combining marine research, art and education. Initiated by ARTPORT_making waves, “WE ARE OCEAN_Blaupause” highlights the importance of Baltic Sea seagrass meadows for biodiversity and marine protection.

Students from the Regional School Windland on Rügen created artworks with artist Michelle-Marie Letelier, inspired by seagrass and ocean challenges. Supported by scientist Dr. Dorit Visbeck-Liebers, they explored how creativity and research can raise awareness for climate protection and inspire action.

Ocean Museum Germany heads international research project on the protection of harbour porpoises

Fourteen partners from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Finland and Lithuania have joined forces to develop effective protection measures for the highly endangered Baltic Sea harbour porpoise. The five-year project headed by the Ocean Museum Germany and sponsored by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) will evaluate scientific data on the population structure, threats and habitat quality of harbour porpoises in the Baltic.
