Project- and job description

We are searching for a qualified, enthusiastic scientist and curator to represent and lead the museum’s research and collection activities on all taxa of marine invertebrates and support current and future exhibitions. While a focus on cnidaria is preferred, also candidates with scientific background on other taxa such as crustaceans, mollusks, or echinoderms are invited to apply. The position will strengthen the diverse museum collections of marine invertebrates and represent these taxa in the museum’s exhibitions and outreach activities. A cooperation with other research areas of the museum, such as marine fishes and mammals, conservation, or ecology is expected.

Your tasks:

  • Research with collections and in the aquaria of the museum
  • Fieldwork in a specialized field of marine invertebrate research.
  • Curation and extension of the scientific collection of marine invertebrates, including cnidaria, crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms, and other taxa.
  • Advancement and maintenance of databases for collections, and their web-based access
  • Scientific publications and presentations
  • Application for national and international third party-funded projects and lead of projects
  • Collaboration in in situ coral restoration efforts of the museum
  • Concepts for and realization of permanent and special exhibitions of the museum
  • Public outreach
  • Collaboration in national and international panels
  • Work as an integrative member of our motivated multidisciplinary museum team and with external partners

Job qualifications:

  • MSc, preferred PhD in biology or related fields
  • Strong scientific expertise in marine invertebrate biodiversity, anatomy, ecology, or physiology
  • Experience in project acquisition, coordination and administration of scientific projects
  • Strong publication record
  • Experience with museum collections
  • Excellent English language skills (written and oral)
  • High degree of creativity and flexibility; ability to work under pressure
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with scientists, technicians, and students
  • Experience in the supervision of BSc-, MSc-

Desirable qualifications:

  • programming skills for databases and their maintenance
  • experience with online databases
  • engagement in institutional environmental or marine protection activities

We are searching for a scientist as a project manager for the project „Union for the Conservation-Management of Harbour Porpoise Populations in the Baltic Sea and their Habitats (CUMBIAH)”. CUMBIAH is a research project financed by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation of Germany and carried out by a consortium of 15 international project partners from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany. The CUMBIAH consortium generates and provides updated information on the conservation status of Baltic harbour porpoise populations and rates important conservation measures to prevent a further population decline.

Your tasks:

  • Project management of the CUMBIAH project at the Ocean Museum Germany
  • Coordination of CUMBIAH project partners and contractors
  • Scientific analysis and interpretation of the data
  • Preparation of scientific publications and administrative project reports
  • Organization of project workshops and meetings
  • Communication at a scientific level
  • Support of committee work (HELCOM, ASCOBANS, JASTARNIA)
  • Project-related media and public outreach
  • National and international business trips

Job qualifications:

  • University Degree (MSc) in natural science or environmental science

Job qualifications:

  • University degree (MSc.) in veterinary medicine, pathology or biology with a focus on animal ecology or animal physiology
  • Experience in the autopsy of mammals and/or wild animals
  • Experience and confidence in using MS Office
  • Knowledge of the English language
